Doug Cox & Todd Butler
It's only a matter of time before two gifted performers who share a love of guitars, who live in the same place (Comox Valley, BC) and who strive to create something musically unique turn their friendship into a creative partnership.
Doug and Todd joined forces in 2001. Before they knew it, they had an album (Live Blues, 2002) and a growing fan base of supporters who wanted to hear more original songs. One problem. This impromptu duo didn't have more originals. So they wrote some! With considerable experience behind them - Todd and Doug each have multiple solo recordings to their credit - they entered a studio in March, 2003 and emerged in June with their proper debut, Dobro and Guitar. The CD was introduced at last summer's Montreal Jazz Festival where they were presented as part of the "acoustic masters" series. Cox was the first Dobro player in the history of the Jazz Festival to be presented as a feature performer. The CD has gone on to gain critical accolades including Acoustic Guitar Magazine contributor Ron Forbes-Roberts dubbing it the "acoustic instrumental CD of the year."

Typically, the two instruments named in the title of this CD are featured together in blues/bluegrass/country formats. The 14 beautifully crafted instrumental duets on Dobro and Guitar are a blend of roots, jazz, and folk and even a bit of tongue in cheek faux flamenco. Most of these originals have a reflective quality, which Cox makes the most of with his excellent, elegiac dobro work. Butler, best known for his clever satirical songs, turns out to be a terrific guitarist with great technique and subtlety. The results of this interplay on tunes like the beautiful Onoway and Closing Credits is stunning. |
