In the early morning of August 29th, 1997 Alert Bay awoke to the news that the Kwakwaka’wakw Big House (Gukwdzi) was on fire. The loss of their traditional Big House, an important site for many cultural traditions, was a terrible blow to the whole community, and they united to rebuild it. In May of 1998 the carvers began recreating the house posts and support beams. This CD was conceived out of the need to raise funds for the continued operating costs and maintenance of the Alert Bay Gukwdzi.
